World Food Programme distributing food in Libya

The U.N. World Food Programme announced today that is delivering food inside Libya at six different locations in the Beidan area, between Ajdabiya and Benghazai in the east of the country and providing logistical and telecommunications support to other humanitarian groups.

The Rome-based food aid distributor said it is working with the Libyan Red Crescent, and has so far reached more than 7,000 people who have been displaced from Ajdabiya.

More than 62 metric tons of food, mainly wheat flour, lentils and fortified date bars, have been distributed, it said, and that more than 20,000 people displaced to other areas of Libya from Ajdabiya will start to receive food assistance over the next few days.

WFP also said it working with the Red Crescent to provide food to 85,000 people over the next two weeks in Benghazi and surrounding areas. These are people who normally rely heavily on Libya’s public food distribution system, which is being disrupted by the conflict, WFP said.
