Stabenow: Farm bill still needed, and other comments

The American people still need the farm bill to provide a safety net to the farmers who provide the nation's food and to provide nutrition for low income people, Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., said today in advance of Monday’s expected vote on final passage of the bill.

Stabenow made the comments in a C-SPAN interview that will be aired Sunday at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. EDT. The video is available now on the C-SPAN website.

Stabenow also provided a detailed list of her concerns about the proposed sale of Smithfield Foods to a Chinese company, said her promise to Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., not to include any last minute proposals on the regulation of gentically modified seeds is due to concerns about the legislative process, and explained why she expects to support immigration reform this year even though she did not support it the last time a bill came up.
