White potatoes, horsemeat inspection subject of House Ag approps amendments

White potatoes could be purchased by mothers in the government’s nutrition program for women, infants and children and the Agriculture Department could not inspect horse meat intended for human consumption under amendments adopted today by the House Appropriations Committee in the fiscal year 2014 Agriculture Appropriations bill that it subsequently adopted.

The major provisions of the bill were not changed from the subcommittee markup.

The bill totals $19.5 billion in discretionary funding, which is $1.3 billion below the fiscal year 2013-enacted level and approximately equal to the current level caused by automatic sequestration spending cuts, said House Appropriations Committee Chairman Harold Rogers, R-Ky.

This total is $516 million below the president’s request for these programs, Rogers added.

More detailed coverage of the debate will follow.
