Republican leaders distribute SNAP proposal with plans to vote this month

House Republican Whip Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., late last week distributed a memo from House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., on his proposal to make cuts to the food stamp program with a note that, “We expect to vote on this proposal in September.”

The Hagstrom Report obtained a copy of the note that McCarthy sent to House Republican members on Thursday and a copy of the Cantor memo on the bill.

A House Republican aide said today that the leadership appears to have sent the proposal to the Congressional Budget Office for scoring. The Republican leadership has said the goal is to cut $40 billion over 10 years from the SNAP. CBO has said SNAP is expected to cost about $760 billion over 10 years without the proposed cuts.

A House Democratic aide said today that Democrats have not received any information from the majority on the proposal.
