USDA releases food security report

The Agriculture Department’s Economic Research Service today released a report that 14.5 percent of American households were food insecure at least some time during the year in 2012, meaning they lacked access to enough food for an active, healthy life for all household members.

The percentage was down slightly from the 14.9 percent in 2011, but ERS said the difference is not considered statistically significant.

The prevalence of very low food security was unchanged at 5.7 percent.

The Center for Budget and Policy Priorities said the figures “are essentially consistent with the findings in 2011, showing again that the slow recovery from the Great Recession has been very hard for low-income Americans.”
