EU ag committee approves CAP reform plan

The European Parliament Agriculture Committee today approved the political agreement on reform of the Common Agricultural Policy struck last week by negotiators for the European Commission, the European Council of Ministers and the European Parliament.

This action paves the way for approval by the European Parliament in October and the European Council in December.

Pekka Pesonen, the secretary-general of Copa-Cogeca, the European associations of farm groups and co-ops, thanked the committee members for their vote.

“We have been working hard to get a final deal on the CAP wrapped up so that farmers and cooperatives know what lies ahead and can get on with their investment plans," Pesonen said in a news release.

“Copa-Cogeca thanks European Parliament Agriculture Committee for their positive vote today on the final package and also on the CAP reform transitional arrangements. This will enable the new CAP to be introduced in 2014, with a transitional phase, and apply in full in 2015.”
