FAO conference approves $1.06 billion budget

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization’s governing conference has unanimously approved a regular program budget of $1.06 billion for the 2012-13 biennium, equivalent to a 1.4 percent increase over the current biennium, the agency said in a news release Saturday.

That budget will assure implementation of the FAO’s proposed work program for the next two years, but the delegates to the conference also insisted upon $34.5 million in cost savings, the news release said.

In addition, FAO expects some $1.4 billion in voluntary contributions from members and partners over the next biennium. The fact that such extra-budgetary resources exceed the regular budget is further evidence of members' confidence in the organization, outgoing Director General Jacques Diouf said in his closing speech to the conference.

In recent years, the United States has provided about 22 percent of FAO’s budget.
