Obama nominates Lew, Solis resigns

President Barack Obama will nominate Jacob Lew, his chief of staff, to succeed Timothy Geithner as Treasury secretary and Labor Secretary Hilda Solis has resigned, the Washington Post reported today.

Lew has also served as budget director.

Solis sent Labor Department employees an email that she had told Obama today she will resign.

Solis, a Mexican-American and the first Latina to head a federal agency, attempted a rewrite of farm child labor laws, but after protests from farm groups the White House insisted that Labor pull the regulation from consideration and announce that it will not be reconsidered as long as Obama is president.
