The Global Institute for Food Security in Saskatoon, Sasketchewan, announced Friday that it had appointed Roger Beachy as its founding executive director and CEO, effective January 1.
Beachy was the first director of the Agriculture Department’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture.
The institute, housed at the University of Saskatchewan, was launched December 10 by the university, the province of Saskatchewan, and Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc. (PotashCorp.)
Beachy was founder of the Danforth Plant Science Centre in Missouri. The Obama administration appointed Beachy to a six-year term as the first director of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture and USDA's chief scientist in 2009, but he left in 2011, citing family concerns in St. Louis.
Beachy holds a doctorate in plant pathology from Michigan State University and a bachelor of arts degree in biology from Goshen College in Goshen, Ind.
