Commodities Futures Trading Commissioner Bart Chilton expects to take over the commission’s investigation into the case of MF Global, he said in an email to The Hagstrom Report late Thursday.
“The senior commissioner, which I would be, has traditionally stepped in in such circumstances, and I expect that to be the case, although the three of us (Commissioner [Scott] O’Malia, [Mark] Wetjen and I) will make the determination,” Chilton said in an email.
MF Global did not segregate customer funds from its own trading funds. Farmers who had left cash with the firm lost millions of dollars, but James Giddens, the trustee who represents customers of the failed firm’s brokerage unit, said MF Global customers in the United States are likely to get 93 percent of their money back, The Wall Street Journal has reported.
