The Senate today confirmed Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., as secretary of State, with a vote of 94 to 3.
Republican Sens. Ted Cruz and John Cornyn of Texas and James Inhofe of Oklahoma, opposed the nomination, and Kerry himself voted “present,” the New York Times reported.
The confirmation ends Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton’s tenure in that position.
Rep. Ed Markey, D-Mass., who is running for Kerry’s seat, praised the confirmation.
“Going from Hillary Clinton to John Kerry at the State Department is like the Red Sox going from Ted Williams to Carl Yastrzemski, both possessing hall of fame talent and passion for the job,” Markey said.
