Mexico appoints new agriculture officials

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, who took office on December 1, has named Enrique Martinez y Martinez as minister of Mexico’s Secretariat of Agriculture Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA), the National Meat Association has reported in its publication, Lean Trimmings.
Nieto also appointed Baltazar Hinojosa Manuel Ochoa as chief director of the Agency of Marketing Services and Development of Agricultural Markets (ASERCA).
He also appointed M.V.Z. Enrique Sánchez Cruz as chief director of the Health, Agri-Food Safety and Quality Services (SENASICA), a position that he has been performing since the last administration.
SENASICA complements SAGARPA Sec Salud functions in terms of meat and poultry safety by certifying and providing meat inspection services related to the Federally Inspected Type (TIF) domestic establishments, while SENASICA also is responsible for the re-inspection of imported meats and the authorization of foreign plants exporting meats and poultry to the United States, NMA said.
