A coalition of 153 small farm groups organized by the Rural Coalition and the National Family Farm Coalition said Thursday they supported the sequester avoidance proposal written by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., that would have ended the direct payments program but provided money for a range of farm programs that were not extended with the rest of the 2008 farm bill.
In a letter to the Senate and House, they said that the extension had thrown key conservation, small business and energy programs “under the bus” in order to extend the direct payments, and that the sequester proposal would have rectified the situation by providing for those programs for the rest of fiscal year 2013.
