Federal crop insurance indemnities for 2012 have reached a record $16.99 billion, according to the Agriculture Department's Risk Management Agency, The Des Moines Register Online reported Monday.
The 2012 figure resulted from the severe drought throughout the Plains and Midwest last year. The previous record, the Register noted, was $10.8 billion in 2011 when disasters included a freeze in Florida and drought in Texas.
