Farmers Union’s Swenson to head FSA in Colorado

Leland Swenson, a former president of the National Farmers Union, will become Colorado executive director of the Farm Service Agency on May 19, he said in an email last week. The FSA state directors are political appointments.

Swenson was president of the National Farmers Union from 1988 to 2002. President Bill Clinton appointed him to serve on the 21st Century Commission on Production Agriculture.

He was executive director for the Community Alliance with Family Farmers in California from June 2002 to March 2005 when he joined the Rocky Mountain Farmers Union, which is based in Denver and represents more than 26,000 members in Colorado, Wyoming and New Mexico. He has held the title of executive vice president in charge of government relations and organization and membership development.

Before being elected NFU president, Swenson was president of South Dakota Farmers Union for seven years. He was raised on a farm in Minnesota and completed the Farmers Union senior youth program.
