House leadership has decided to split funding authorization for the food stamps program, officially known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), from the rest of the farm bill that failed to pass the House last month, according to a story posted by the National Journal.
According to the National Journal story, House leaders are preparing the rest of the farm bill for a possible floor vote later this week, and the Rules Committee may post language for that section as early as tonight.
A House aide told the Journal that nutrition program funding will be dealt with separately, although no timetable for that was mentioned.
A split bill is “not the preference” of House Agriculture Committee Frank Lucas, R-Okla., a Lucas spokeswoman emailed the Hagstrom Report.
However, she added, “He wants to get a new farm bill enacted and will do what’s necessary to accomplish that goal. If leadership can deliver the votes, he will support it.”
