Farm bill movements in Senate and House slow and subtle

Amidst rumors that a senator has placed a hold on naming conferees for the farm bill, Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., and ranking member Thad Cochran, R-Miss., said today they are consulting with colleagues about sending the farm bill back to the House and asking for a conference.

Following a hearing on the reauthorization of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, both Stabenow and Cochran said they were consulting with their colleagues before filing a motion on the bill.

Stabenow had said Tuesday that any senators with concerns about the bill should consult with her or Cochran.

Meanwhile, about 20 House Republicans met with House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., to discuss a possible nutrition bill to be brought up in the House. Some of the attendees were members of the House Agriculture Committee and some were not, a knowledgeable House source told The Hagstrom Report. The source also said that it appears this would be the first of many meetings.
