Cantor forms group to work on nutrition bill

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., has established a working group to help write a nutrition bill that could theoretically pass the House with only Republican votes.

The Hagstrom Report has obtained a list that contains 16 members including Cantor, although there have been rumors that the group includes more than 20 members.

Cantor’s office declined to release a list of members, but an aide said, “The leader is involved in a variety of outreach efforts with members to chart a path forward on the SNAP [Supplemental Nutrition Assistance] program.”

House Agriculture Committee Chairman Frank Lucas, R-Okla., and Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, both told The Hill today that writing a bill will be difficult.

“I’m continuing to poll my colleagues, both Rs and Ds, and doing the best I can,” Lucas told The Hill. “My next stop is a dentist appointment. This has been a trying week … at least the drilling there will lead to some relief.”

“That is about an even money thing. It’s a toss up,” King said. “If we can come to some consensus, leadership wants to get this done.”
