Cochran joins Vilsack’s call for farm bill passage

Reacting to Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack’s statement today that he does not have authority to continue cotton payments beyond October 1, Senate Agriculture Committee ranking member Thad Cochran, R-Miss., backed Vilsack’s renewed call for Congress to pass a farm bill.

“This situation is another reason why a new farm bill needs to be passed as soon as possible,” Cochran said.

“Cotton growers in the United States and Brazil have worked to address problems identified by the World Trade Organization, and the cotton program in the Senate's farm bill deals with those concerns,” he said. “We need to act to avoid retaliatory actions and unnecessary pain to an important American industry.”
