Cantor schedules food stamp vote next week

The office of House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., announced late today that he has scheduled for next week a vote on the bill that would cut food stamp spending by $40 billion over 10 years.

According to the schedule, the vote would occur sometime between Wednesday and Friday.

The announcement says that the bill will be sponsored by House Agriculture Committee Chairman Frank Lucas, R-Okla.

Lucas has said he will vote for the bill, but it has been developed by Cantor and his aides. The legislative language has not been released and neither has the Congressional Budget Office score.

The bill is titled the “Nutrition Reform and Work Opportunity Act,” but it does not have a bill number and will be subject to a rule.

Cantor has also scheduled a vote between Wednesday and Friday on a continuing resolution to fund the government after the end of the fiscal year on September 30.

Votes will not occur until Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., and votes are expected to be finished by 3 p.m. on Friday, Cantor said.

The House is scheduled to go into recess on Friday until September 30, but both Republican and Democratic leaders have said the House may have to be in session during that period.
