E. Linwood Tipton, 1934-2013
Tipton grew up on a Missouri dairy farm and earned bachelor of science in agriculture and master of science in economics degrees from the University of Missouri.

After service in the U.S. Army Finance Corps, he started his dairy career early in the 1960s as an economist with the Eastern Milk Producers Cooperative, where he supported efforts to streamline regulated farm milk pricing. He later joined the Milk Industry Foundation and the International Ice Cream Association.

In 1990 Tipton convinced dairy food manufacturers to create the International Dairy Foods Association, which brought together the Milk Industry Foundation, the International Ice Cream Association and the National Cheese Institute in an effort to magnify the voice of the dairy processing industry in Washington.

Tipton is survived by his wife, Connie, who succeeded him as president and CEO of IDFA upon his retirement in 2003 and remains in that position. After his retirement, Tipton founded The Tipton Group, a consulting firm.

Tipton also founded the International Sweetener Colloquium, the Dairy Forum and the Dairy Show.

The Tiptons were also involved in the establishment of the dairy checkoff program, founded IDFA’s annual Capitol Hill Ice Cream Party in 1983 and led the 1984 campaign to convince Congress to authorize presidents to proclaim July as National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday of July as National Ice Cream Day.

President Ronald Reagan was the first to issue the proclamations, and this past July the White House released a photo of President Barack Obama celebrating National Ice Cream Day with a sundae.

A longtime resident of Capitol Hill, Tipton served as chairman of the Barracks Row Main Street restoration project and successfully secured federal funding for much-needed renovations to the Eastern Market Metro Plaza.

The family suggests memorials to the Dairy Recognition and Education Foundation, which provides financial assistance for graduate students in dairy science or a related field.
