Farm bill conference ends

The farm bill conference has come to an end after more than two hours of statements that included all the differences among members, but were conciliatory in tone.

The four principal negotiators — House Agriculture Committee Chairman Frank Lucas, R-Okla., Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., House Agriculture ranking member Collin Peterson, D-Minn., and Senate Agriculture ranking member Thad Cochran, R-Miss.— said they would continue to work together next week even though the House will not be in session.

Peterson also told reporters that some proposals to deal with differences in the commodity title had been presented. Peterson also said he has the votes to prevail on the dairy program that dairy farmers prefer.

The House has left for the week and will not return until the week of November 11.
