Jarrett, Muñoz blog from White House on expiration of higher food stamp benefits

Two White House staffers close to President Barack Obama blogged on Monday that the cuts to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program that went into effect on Friday “are devastating” to many families, “and couldn’t come at a worse time as they begin to regain their footing following the worst recession since the Great Depression.”

The blog about the cuts to SNAP, better known as food stamps, was written by Valerie Jarrett, the senior adviser who oversees the Offices of Public Engagement and Intergovernmental Affairs, and Cecilia Muñoz, assistant to the president and director of the Domestic Policy Council.

Jarrett and Muñoz noted that Obama proposed an extension of the benefit levels before the cut. The White House, has not, however, advanced legislation to reverse the cuts.

They also said that the House proposal for bigger cuts “will stall our economic growth over the months and years ahead, while hampering our ability to build a stronger, more robust American workforce.” It is “imperative” to pass a comprehensive farm bill, they wrote.
