Stakeholder comment on Hagen continues

Most stakeholders continue to praise outgoing Agriculture Undersecretary for Food Safety Elisabeth Hagen, who announced Friday her plans to depart USDA, Food Safety News reported today as its editor called for a 10-year term for the position.

The Consumer Federation of America praised Hagen in a statement, but also called on President Barack Obama to nominate her successor quickly.

“We remember and regret that the president delayed an unconscionably long time in filling this important position originally,” CFA said.

“Dr. Hagen wasn’t sworn in until August 2010. Recognizing that there are powerful interests who want to keep meat and poultry inspection under the influence of the regulated industry, we urge the president to put public health first and protect American consumers.”
