House Agriculture Committee ranking member Collin Peterson, D-Minn., said Wednesday that the dairy issue has been resolved, but an International Dairy Food Association official told The Hagstrom Report today that IDFA has not been informed of that.

Peterson declined to reveal details when he talked to reporters Wednesday. A Peterson spokeswoman today said she “could not discuss what is being negotiated” but she did not dispute the accounts.

Peterson wrote the original dairy proposal in conjunction with the National Milk Producers Federation, which represents dairy farmers. That proposal, known as the Dairy Security Act, passed the House and Senate Agriculture committees and the Senate but due to objections from IDFA, which represents processors, a section that discourages farmers from increasing production when prices are low was taken out on the House floor.

Jerry Slominski, an IDFA official, said today, “We have not been told that dairy has been resolved. If it has, I suppose you could argue both ways whether that is a good or bad sign from our perspective.”

National Milk did not return a call seeking comment.
