Jewish groups hold hunger Seder at Capitol today

The Jewish Council for Public Affairs and MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger will host members of Congress, administration officials and other national faith, anti-hunger and anti-poverty leaders for the National Hunger Seder today in the Capitol Visitor Center.

The National Hunger Seder, an adaptation of the traditional Passover Seder, tells the story of the exodus of ancient Hebrews from slavery in Egypt with emphasis on the moral imperative to end hunger in America, and is part of anti-hunger mobilization taking place in communities across the country around the Passover holiday.

This year’s Seder underscores the rise in hunger among seniors, the organizers said, and is intended to encourage support for adequate funding for nutrition programs in the Older Americans Act.

The groups expect participants from the White House and the Agriculture and Health and Human Services departments, a wide range of anti-hunger groups, and the following members of Congress:

Rep. Debbi Wasserman-Schultz, D-Fla.
Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif.
Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass.
