Mitchell named executive director of Global Child Nutrition Foundation

Gene White, president of the board of the Global Child Nutrition Foundation, which promotes school feeding programs in developing countries, today announced the appointment of Arlene Mitchell as executive director.

Raised on a family farm in Michigan, Mitchell served for the past six years as deputy director for access and markets in the agricultural development program at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Previously, she was an executive in the United Nations World Food Program in Rome, where she led the global school feeding effort; managed international technical assistance and training activities for the Agriculture Department; and served as both volunteer and staff with the U.S. Peace Corps.
GCNF gave Mitchell its lifetime achievement award in 2012 and noted she had been the first chief of school feeding for WFP. It also mentioned that the number of children benefitting from WFP school feeding programs during her tenure increased from 12 million to more than 20 million, and that a de-worming effort linked to school meals treated more than 1 million children.
The Global Child Nutrition Foundation is a U.S.-based 501(c)3 organization founded in 2006 with a legal status in Maryland and Virginia.
White and Mitchell are both based in Seattle.
