White House, companies announcing new climate-change steps

The White House today will release a report that says delaying action to stem climate change will have major negative economic consequences, and companies will announce steps to focus on food security and resilience in the agricultural sector, White House officials said Monday.
The report was embargoed until 6 a.m. today.
White House counselor John Podesta said that the lack of action on Capitol Hill is “a lagging indicator” of public policy and that he believes the Republican-led House “will catch up with the political reality” at some point, because “the public is solidly on board with the idea that climate change is happening and they want to see clean-energy solutions.”
The new report from the Council of Economics Advisers finds that “delaying policy actions by a decade increases total mitigation costs by approximately 40 percent, and failing to take any action would risk substantial economic damage.”
