FDA’s Taylor: No extensions on food comment periods

Stakeholders in the remaining Food and Drug Administration rules to implement the Food Safety Modernization Act of 2011 should not expect any extensions of the comment periods once they are released by the Office of Management and Budget, Food and Drug Administration Deputy Commissioner for Food Michael Taylor said Wednesday.

In a speech to the United Fresh Produce Association, Taylor said that the proposed rules “are coming soon. We are very close.”

But he noted that FDA is under court order to release the rules, so “don’t be expecting any extensions of the next comment period,” he said., noting that once they are released it will be important for stakeholders to comment in a timely fashion.

“The deadlines are driving everything,” Taylor said.

He also said once the rules are in place, FDA will still be two to four years away from enforcing them.
