Vilsack clarifies farm program signup dates

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack on Friday clarified the opening and closing dates for farm program signup in 2014 and 2015.
“The owners of the property have the opportunity to reallocate base acres and to adjust yields, and they’ll have that opportunity from September 29 to February 27, 2015.” Vilsack said.
“Starting on November 17, 2014, and continuing at least until March 31 of 2015, they’ll have the opportunity to make the election as to which of these safety net programs is best for their operation.”
Vilsack was referring to the choice between the Agricultural Risk Coverage and Price Loss Coverage programs.
He made the comments in an interview with the Red River Farm Network. FarmPolicy.com has provided a transcript of the interview. (See link)
A Farm Service Agency spokesman today confirmed the dates, and noted that in addition to making the selection, which will last for the five years of the farm bill, farmers will have to sign up each year to participate in the program.
That signup for 2014 and 2015 will begin in mid April and continue to mid summer, according to an FSA chart.
