Senate Agriculture Committee ranking member Pat Roberts, R-Kansas, won re-election Tuesday and is poised to become chairman of that committee when the Republicans take control of the Senate in January.
Roberts, 78, defeated Greg Orman, a businessman who ran as an independent.
The Senate has had 53 Democrats and two independents who caucus with the Democrats and 45 Republicans.
The next Senate will have at least 52 Republicans, 44 Democrats and two independents.
Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont is expected to continue caucusing with the Democrats, but Independent Angus King of Maine has said he would consider switching to the Republicans.
The Alaska Senate race has not been decided and the Louisiana Senate race is headed to a runoff on December 6.
