King reintroduces interstate commerce bill

Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, this week reintroduced his bill that would prevent the states from enacting laws that would prohibit restrictions on the sale of an agricultural product from other states based on its means of production.

King, who attempted to include his Protect Interstate Commerce Act in the 2014 farm bill, but failed, has been motivated by California’s egg law that requires that eggs sold in the state come from hens in cages of a certain size.

He says the bill would not stop states from labeling certain items, and that they could still set production standards within their states.
