Under the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act, all school food service staff members have to complete annual continuing education and training courses as of July 15 of this year, but only 37 percent of schools have adequate budgets for staff development and training, according to a report issued today by the Pew Charitable Trusts and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
“Serving Healthy School Meals: Staff Development and Training Needs” summarizes data from a nationally representative survey of the local agencies that administer the national school lunch and breakfast programs.
Responses were collected during the 2012-13 school year. The authors of the survey noted that the study was done before USDA’s national professional standards for school nutrition personnel were established.
Earlier studies in the series noted the need for better kitchen equipment.
